Why should International Students Aim for a Scholarship?

It is very obvious that most of the international students applying for Master’s abroad need to look out for scholarship options and/or assistantships.

Scholarships are designed to cover your basic costs of studying. Depending on the type of scholarships you are awarded. Scholarships can cover your tuition, books, student fees, and in some cases, even a portion of your living costs while studying.

Opting for scholarships helps the student in handling the expenses for his/her study at the university, as the cost of education is high in the US. Also, the student if eligible for the scholarship would be able to make for the living expenses depending on the state chosen.

There are good numbers of scholarship options available for international students provided the application reaches the university before the deadline.

Eligibility for Scholarship and/or Assistantship:

Most of the students are under the misconception that GRE, IELTS /TOEFL score play a major role in gaining scholarships. But the fact is that there many other factors involved granting scholarships to the students such as-

  • Undergraduate/Graduate GPA
  • Paper publications in the previous years of study
  • Internships attended
  • Relevant work experience
  • Extra-curricular activities with National /International recognition (especially for scholarships based on sports and other performance of the student).

Types of Scholarships:

A scholarship offered basically varies from university to university.General scholarships that almost all universities provide are

  • Merit-based Scholarships: They are referred to as scholarships of excellence. As it is awarded to the students who are good at their academics, athletics, certifications or artistic activities.
  • Departmental Scholarships:
  • Dean Scholarships
Graduate Assistantships:

International students mainly look forward to on-campus employment opportunities. A graduate assistantship is a good choice for those who have proven academic skills and can match their research interest with those of the university.

Research Assistantships:

Usually, Students interested for research assistantships initially need to get the details of the respective professor in the desired field of interest and schedule an appointment /send a request of interest in joining his/her research work.Applying for research assistantship can be done after completing the 1st semester of education or along with the initial admission application.

Teaching Assistantships:

Students interested for teaching assistantships need to demonstrate their prior teaching skills such that the professor recommends the admission committee for the assistantship opportunity and designate the relevant stipend/tuition fee waiver.

Mostly some universities have different scholarship option:

  • Some universities give an option to complete certain prerequisite courses. Such that a student gaining a GPA above 3.5 in these would be eligible for the scholarship.
  • The student would have the opportunity once he registers for the 9 credit hours and completes them successfully with a GPA above 3.5.

When to Apply??

Most students generally miss out on the deadlines for scholarships. Every university offers two deadlines- priority deadline and general application deadline.

Applications submitted before the priority deadline would be automatically considered for scholarship opportunity by the admissions committee. No separate application would be needed.

If the application is submitted as per the general deadline, then the student needs to request the University for applying to the scholarship options available, with respect to the department applied to. Here the student needs to prepare a strong scholarship essay stating his/her eligibility for a scholarship from the University.

Where Do scholarships come from?

Students will be awarded scholarships from different sources. Check the guidelines for each scholarship to see what you qualify for.
